Climate Follies Encore

The curtain has fallen, but due to demand, the players will present a final bit of show. I must begin by thanking Dr. Judith Curry for opening the long avoided climate debate. On Tuesday, Jan 25, 2011, she stated on her blog that she wanted to refute the science text, Slaying the Sky Dragon, but didn’t understand it.
The repressed college professor in me demanded that I explain any difficulties on this subject. The invited CC list on the resulting email thread was a who’s who of climate science, mostly of the Luke Warmist and Deniers’ camps. Three days of staid homilies were exchanged until finally the crux of the problem was identified. Anyone who is NOT a denier just does not understand basic Physics.

We have now reached the moment of truth. All carbon caused climate change supporters must fall into just two categories. These Warmists must be either WILLFULLY IGNORANT OF PHYSICS or they must be ENGAGED IN A CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY. It has taken a determined effort by a team of the world’s top scientists to solve this 115-year-old riddle, but there is no longer any mystery.
We will first deal with the willful ignorance of Physics issue. The Warmists have claimed that the only reason there is not unanimous support for the Carbon Dioxide warming hypothesis is because it is too complex to be understood. To the contrary, every grade school student and the science illiterate Al Gore understand these false claims. To counter these claims takes REAL science that is difficult to explain.

One of the greatest open debates of modern times concerning the greenhouse gas theory is set to start in earnest. Critics predict an almighty global warming showdown between ‘deniers’ and ‘doomsayers.’

Knowledge of the subject and an ability to understand how words are used is required to know how misleading interpretations are created to pervert climate science. It is part of the attempt to persuade the public so their collective voice can overwhelm scientists asking legitimated questions: it’s a variation of the consensus argument. The opening statement of an article in the November 9, 2005 ScienceDaily provides a good example
It said, “A new report indicates that the vast majority of the rapid temperature increase recently observed in Europe is likely due to an unexpected greenhouse gas: water vapor.”
